At a recent Graphic Communications Leadership Institute (GCLI) Workshop (gcleadershipinstitute.com), the subject of individual assessments came up. While there are many to choose from, all agreed that these can be helpful and in ways beyond assisting in the hiring process.
One GCLI member spoke about the value he and his leadership team gained from the Harrison Assessment. Harrison’s Paradox Report and the Greatest Strengths summary gave him new insight into his preferences and, in turn, into the elements of his job responsibilities that are a strong fit for him. This information has helped him focus on his strengths while taking more care to delegate some items (in particular, those aligning with lesser strengths) to his team members.
An even greater benefit was the opportunity to share these results with his colleagues on the senior leadership team. Each member of the team agreed to complete the assessment. A comprehensive, personalized debrief was held for each. All agreed to then share their individual Paradox Report™ as part of a team assessment.
Each team member’s assessment results were mapped on a grid to show their individual traits and preferences, both on their own and compared with colleagues. The grid revealed shared strengths as well as notable differences in preferences, traits, and working styles. There was much robust discussion on areas of common preferences and especially on areas showing significant differences.
According to this GCLI member, the discussion helped him and his team members understand and appreciate how these preferences contributed to the way each approached their work. This understanding has led to greater communication, cooperation, and appreciation between and among team members. Knowing how he and his team members are “wired” is a key element in building a strong, committed team.
Assessments can be a great resource in the hiring process. They are also beneficial for individual and team development.
